Braces—An Early Start to Get It Right

BracesYour child’s teeth and jaws grow and develop all the way into their late teens. Malocclusion can start in the early years of life, and only continue to get worse as your child gets older. Misaligned teeth and jaws can lead to serious oral health care issues, including tooth decay, gum disease and more. Not to mention, misaligned teeth can also affect your child’s smile and their confidence. At Oasis Dental, we can realign your child’s teeth and jaw, setting them up for a healthy, beautiful smile with braces.

Early Orthodontics

Your child’s teeth and jaw undergoes numerous changes as it grows and develops. In fact, the jaw doesn’t stop growing until their late teens. Many bite problems that develop in children occur as the result of how the jaw, and the muscles, grow. It is recommended, to avoid serious issues, that your child gets their first orthodontic evaluation by the age of 7.

You may be wondering why your child needs to be seen so early when their permanent teeth haven’t even grown in yet. There are many malocclusion issues that make their presence known as early 2 to 3 years of age. An early evaluation of your child’s mouth gives us insight as to how your child’s teeth and jaw will continue to grow. This then allows us to take action before the issues become more severe.

There are several issues that your child could be faced with at an early age:
•  Protruding front teeth.
•  Poor bite.
•  Your child may not have sufficient room in their mouth for their teeth to grow properly into place.

Many of these issues can be lessened, or even avoided with early intervention. With a thorough evaluation of your child’s mouth, we can uncover these issues, and recommend the treatments that will provide your child with the best results possible.

What are Braces?

Braces are a common orthodontic treatment for kids, used to correct misaligned teeth and even misaligned jaws. They consist of metal brackets, which are bonded directly onto the teeth, archwires, and metal bands. The metal bands are attached to the back teeth and anchor the archwire, which is connected to brackets (held in place by elastic O-rings). The archwire works to move the teeth gradually into their proper alignment. In some cases, rubber bands, springs, or other devices may also be used in conjunction with braces to align the jaw.

At What Age Should Your Child Get Braces?

Even though your child’s first orthodontic evaluation takes place by the age of 7, braces are often not placed until between the ages of 11 and 13. Usually, by this age, your child would have lost all of their baby teeth, and all of their adult teeth would have grown in. However, not all children develop at the same rate, so the exact age at which braces are placed will depend on how your child grows.

Do Braces Hurt?

Many kids worry that braces will hurt. Traditional braces work by putting pressure on the teeth, loosening them in their sockets to guide them to their new positions. This can cause minor discomfort, but it only occurs when the braces are adjusted, and the discomfort does not last for long.

Braces can help give your child a healthy, beautiful smile that will last a lifetime. Contact Oasis Dental today for more information and to schedule your child’s consultation.
