Dentures Vs Dental Implants

You can experience tooth loss as a result of some different situations – gum disease, facial/oral trauma, bruxism, and more. When you lose your teeth, your whole quality of life is affected. Seemingly simple tasks suddenly become more challenging. It is essential for your oral health, and your quality of life, to replace your missing teeth as soon as possible. At Oasis Dental, we offer several options for replacing your missing teeth, including dentures and Dental Implants.

What are Dentures?

Dentures have been used for hundreds of years to replace missing teeth. They have undergone many developments throughout the years, making them much more natural looking, and much more comfortable. They can be used to replace an entire arch (or both) of missing teeth or sections of missing teeth. Both types of dentures are fairly similar. They consist of acrylic resin teeth set into an acrylic, gum colored base. They are designed and created from impressions of your mouth (which are usually taken following any necessary tooth extractions). Dentures are supported by the gums and held in place by suction. Partial dentures also have metal clasps, which hook to your healthy teeth and provide your replacement teeth with more support.

Pros and Cons of Dentures

Dentures have several benefits:
•  Thanks to technological developments in recent years, dentures appear more natural and feel more comfortable.
•  You can eat all of your favorite foods again.
•  Your smile is restored.
•  You regain your smile and your confidence.

Dentures also have several disadvantages as well, including:
•  They require a significant amount of nightly maintenance.
•  Dentures can slip out of place, or even fall out, causing embarrassment as well as painful denture sores.
•  They will not always fit the same. Over time, your jaw changes shape, which means you will need to be refitted for dentures (this occurs approximately every seven years).
•  Dentures restrict blood flow to your gums.

What are Implants?

Implants are the latest option available for replacing missing teeth and can be used to replace any number of missing teeth. They require a surgical procedure, during which small titanium rods are inserted into your jawbone. These implants rely on a process known as osseointegration, or the fusion of your jawbone to the implants. When you have healed, the implants become the “roots” that support your replacement teeth. When you are missing an entire arch of teeth, your replacement teeth are typically supported by 6 to 8 implants.

Pros and Cons of Implants

There are several benefits to implants:
•  Implants tend to be more comfortable (your replacement teeth are supported by your Dental Implants, rather than your gums or adjacent teeth).
•  They are held in place with screws, and will not slip out of place.
•  They can be cared for just like your natural teeth.
•  They are consisted to be a permanent solution to tooth loss. The implants imitate the functions of your natural tooth roots, helping to prevent the bone loss that accompanies tooth loss.

Implants also have a few drawbacks as well:
•  Implants require a surgical procedure for placement.
•  They require several weeks to several months for healing.
•  Implants tend to be more expensive than other options, and insurance may not cover the cost.
•  You need to have sufficient bone mass in your jaw for your implants to properly fuse with the bone. If you have experienced substantial bone loss in the jaw, you may first need a need bone graft, or you may be eligible for the All-on-4 treatment concept.
