What is a Cleaning and Exam?

Cleanings and ExamsWhen you come into the dentist every six months or so, the procedure that you will be undergoing is a cleaning and examination. At this appointment, we will do a deep clean of each and every one of your teeth, since even those with the best oral cleanliness routine can still struggle to get to hard to reach places. After you are all cleaned up, we will do an examination of each of your teeth, so we can nip any potential problems in the bud.

What Happens During the Cleaning?

When you come in for your check-up, the first thing that we are going to do is clean your teeth. Even the most diligent of patients still has at least a little bit of plaque build-up and can struggle to access those hard to reach places. As plaque builds, it hardens, and this can lead to gum disease and tartar. We remove any buildup at this time and do what we can to prevent gum disease. The first thing that we will do is scale your teeth, which means simply that we will eliminate the tartar above and below your gums. Then, we will polish your teeth before flossing around each and every one. When we are finished, there is no plaque or tartar anymore, and the surface of your teeth is now smooth all around. This makes it much more difficult for plaque to stick.

What Happens During the Examination?

After you are all clean, we will examine your teeth. We will look for any signs of decay, gum disease (which if caught early enough can often be eliminated with the deep cleaning from before), and oral cancer. We will take x-rays to look deeper under the surface of your teeth and gums to see if there are signs of decay or infection. We will also check how your teeth come together, looking for signs of wear and tear from tooth grinding, problems with your jaw joint, and for cracks, chips, or other damage on your tooth’s surface. Similar to how physicals are important to ensure steady overall body health, these checkups are also important to ensure your oral health.

No matter how well you take care of your teeth, it is extremely important that you regularly come in for your six-month appointments as well. Here at Oasis Dental, Dr. Aldridge takes every precaution to make sure that your oral health remains at its peak.
A better kind of dental practice for your entire family.
