Did You Know if Your Teeth Are Healthy, It Helps with Digestion?
If your dentition is bad or you have problems with misalignment, you can negative affect the digestive process. That is why we emphasize ongoing dental care – care that involves brushing the teeth at least twice a day and flossing at least once daily. We also emphasize the importance of visiting our office every six months for a professional cleaning and checkup. The better your teeth function, the easier it will be to chew your food, which aids in better digestion. The information below explains the connection between good dental care and digestion.

How the Teeth Contribute to Better Digestion

Basically, your teeth begin the digestive process. They do this with help from your tongue and the saliva in the mouth. The teeth and saliva help make the food you eat softer and easy to swallow. The chemicals in the saliva, also breaks down food. Therefore, the teeth are exceptionally vital to digestive health. They are used to prepare the food so it can travel through the digestive tract. Therefore, the job of the teeth is to make sure that the food you chew is digested properly. The mouth features various kinds of teeth—canines and incisors and molars and bicuspids—each of which have a specific chewing function.

How the Teeth Are Designed for Eating

When you chew, the incisors are made to tear and bite food. The canines, which are more pointed, also are designed to tear food. Both the incisors and canines are the first four top and bottom teeth. The bicuspids, which are next to the canines, are made to crush food. We may call these teeth premolars as well. After the bicuspids sit the molars – the first and second molars and the wisdom teeth, if they have not been extracted.
We know how important it is to thoroughly chew your food. That is why we do all we can to ensure our patients' dental health. Healthy teeth make it possible to enjoy food as well as better digestion. That is why we encourage to give us a call for a cleaning and check-up. If you have not had a checkup lately, now is a good time to contact our office.
A better kind of dental practice for your entire family.
