Treatment Options When You Have an Abscess If you are in a lot of pain in one area of your mouth, you have our sympathy. That's because we understand how being in pain in your mouth can affect everything you do. If you are experiencing mouth pain, there is a chance you may have an abscess. Not sure what an abscess is? No problem. Let us tell you about abscesses and what your treatment options are.

What Is An Abscess?

An abscess sounds really serious--and it is. Abscesses are infections in your mouth. Usually an abscess starts with a cavity. Cavities are bacterial infections. The bacteria that is always present in your mouth can eat away at the enamel of your tooth. Over time, the bacteria can bore into the center of your tooth, called the tooth pulp, and infect that as well. If you don't come see us, the infection will continue down to the tooth root. It can also infect the gum around the tooth as well. A pocket of pus will form close to where the infection is. Abscesses can be extremely painful, and the pain can radiate into your neck and jaw.

Treatment for Abscesses

There are several treatment options for abscesses, depending on the severity of your infection. You may need to get the abscess drained, and we can flush the area with a saline solution. You may need to get a root canal in order to save the tooth. To perform a root canal, we have to make an incision in the top of your tooth and clean out your tooth pulp. We put antibiotics and material into the area where the tooth pulp used to be. Then we crown the tooth to protect it. We may have to remove the tooth if the abscess is severe. You may need antibiotic treatment to help the abscess heal. If you are in pain, and you think you might have an abscess, you need to give us a call right away.
A better kind of dental practice for your entire family.
