Tooth Abscess: Causes and Symptoms A tooth abscess is a painful pocket of pus caused by a bacterial infection. This abscess can occur at various areas near the tooth. An abscess that occurs at the tip of the root is a periapical abscess, while an abscess that occurs in the gum at the side of the infected tooth is called a periodontal abscess. At Oasis Dental, Dr. Aldridge and can treat your abscess by draining it out and eliminating the infection. Leaving an abscessed tooth untreated can lead to severe complications.

Causes of Tooth Abscess

A periapical tooth abscess occurs when bacteria invades the innermost chamber of your tooth that houses the dental pulp. The dental pulp contains the tooth nerve, blood vessels and connective tissues. Bacteria can infect the dental pulp by way of a cavity, chip, or fracture in the tooth. The infection can then spread all the way down to the root and causes inflammation and swelling.

Symptoms of Tooth Abscess

Signs and symptoms of a tooth abscess include: [[[DIVSTYLE:margin-left:25px|[[[BulletList:A sharp persistent pain that can radiate to your neck or ear region. A tooth abscess will not disappear on its own. If your abscess ruptures, the pain in your tooth may reduce significantly, but you will still need to get it treated. If the abscess is not able to drain, the infection may spread to other parts of your jaw, head and neck region. People with untreated abscess may develop sepsis which can be life-threatening. Those who have compromised immunity may have increased risks of complications. At Oasis Dental, we may slice open a tooth abscess and allow the pus to drain. Additionally, we strongly recommend a root canal therapy to get rid of the infection and restore your tooth to its original health.
