Alcohol from Mouthwash Can Leave Your Mouth Too Dry

While browsing the dental care aisle at your grocery store, you may notice a common theme between all of the mouthwashes you see. Most of them contain alcohol.
Mouthwash manufactures add alcohol to mouthwashes to keep your mouth clean after brushing. Alcohol is a disinfectant, so it does work for that purpose. However, mouthwashes containing alcohol have a disadvantage. They cause dry mouth.
If you wake up in the morning with a dry mouth, your mouthwash may be to blame. Mouthwashes containing alcohol evaporates the moisture from your mouth after using them. A dry mouth is detrimental to your dental health. It indicates that you aren't producing enough saliva. And believe it or not, saliva is really important. Our saliva contains substances that deter the growth of bacteria. Without it, we are vulnerable to excess bacterial growth in our mouth. This could lead to premature tooth decay or even gum disease.
