Most Common Ways of Adjusting the Bite

Posted on 11/15/2018 by Matt Aldridge DDS
Most Common Ways of Adjusting the BiteIf you suffer from an over, under, or cross bite, it is important to know that treatment options exist. You don't have to live with a poorly aligned bite, as there are several ways to correct the problem. These are a few of the most common.

Orthodontic Treatment

If your poor bite is the result of misaligned teeth, orthodontic treatment like braces or Invisalign aligners can help. Misalignment is a major cause of a bad bite, and by shifting teeth into more ideal positions, the alignment will balance out. This leaves you with a bite that appears more natural as well as straighter teeth.

Bite Splints

A bite splint is an orthotic appliance that works similar to a mouth guard. It holds the jaw into a position with minimal tension. Depending on the severity of your bite issue, you may need to wear the splint at all times, but in other cases, you might be asked to simply wear it at night.

TENS Treatment

In severe cases, TENS treatment may be used to relax the muscles of the jaw. Similar to an electrical massage, these treatments are sometimes enough to coax jaw muscles into less stressful positions, thus correcting the bite.

Sometimes a bite problem is simply caused by a few teeth that don't fit quite right. In these situations, reshaping may be an easy fix. Dental contouring alters the position, shape, and length of one or two teeth. By making the teeth fit together more easily, the bite will also improve.

Do you have a bite that needs adjustment? Are you unhappy with the way that your teeth fit together or the shape of your smile? If any of these scenarios sound like you, please know that we are here to help. Give us a call today to discuss your options.
