Cracked Lips and Their Effect on Oral Health

Posted on 8/25/2018 by Matt Aldridge DDS
Cracked Lips and Their Effect on Oral HealthDo you suffer from dry, cracked lips? If so, you may be concerned with how this condition affects your oral health. Read on to learn more about the underlying cause of cracked lips and how your mouth may be impacted.

What Causes Cracked Lips?

To better understand the effect cracked lips have on oral health, we must first identify what causes the lips to chap or crack. The primary culprit is dehydration, which leads to dry lips and mouth. When you are dehydrated, the natural balance of the body is upset, and damage to the skin can result.

Others experience cracked lips as a result of a vitamin deficiency. Riboflavin, or vitamin B2, is necessary for fat metabolism and cell function, and it is possible that a riboflavin deficiency may be responsible for your cracked lips. To avoid this issue, be sure to eat plenty of lean meat and eggs, both of which are high in this essential nutrient.

Another cause of cracked lips is the side effect from medication. If you are taking medication for high blood pressure, acne, or hypothyroidism, you could experience a negative reaction including dry, cracked lips. In these situations, be sure to seek out medical attention immediately.

How Are Cracked Lips and the Mouth Connected?

While cracked lips may not directly cause any issues within the mouth, there are certainly connections. If dehydration is the culprit, you may suffer from inadequate saliva production. If your mouth doesn't have enough saliva to wash away debris and to stabilize the pH value, bacteria are allowed to multiply and grow. This could lead to decay, cavities, and even problems with gum disease.

Certain medications could also lead to dry mouth, so it is important to be aware of the signs. If you can't seem to get your dry, cracked lips under control, give our office a call.

We'll identify treatments that can protect your lips and the rest of your mouth.
