Is Brushing Too Hard With an Electric Toothbrush Still a Problem?

We want to make sure you are practicing good oral hygiene every day. With all kinds of products out there to choose from, it can be intimidating at times. Most importantly, no matter what you choose, we want to make sure you are using it properly.

You've been reminded to brush your teeth twice a day and floss once a day since you were little, so we don't want you doing harm at the same time. With electric toothbrushes becoming more and more common, we should talk about brushing too hard with those also. Here are some suggestions for best results.

Brushing Properly With an Electric Toothbrush

You dentist most likely told you to pick out a toothbrush with soft bristles, and to not use too much force while brushing. Maybe you don't really enjoy brushing so you've decided to trade in your regular brush for an electric one.

While we defiantly encourage you to do what it takes to get the job done, it's important to inform you that you run the risk of brushing too hard with an electric brush.

It is more likely you will brush harder with an electric toothbrush over a regular toothbrush. Brushing too hard can wear down your tooth enamel causing tooth decay, and can take a toll on your gums.

If you notice your gums starting to recede you may want to ditch the electric toothbrush. To properly use an electric toothbrush, you should just guide it over your teeth and let the brush do the work. When used properly it can be a great tool for you.

We encourage you to talk with us about what tools you are using and how you are using them. I can imagine you would think using a firm or hard brush will get all of those areas really clean, but you could be doing damage that can't be reversed. Yes, we want you to continue to focus on good oral hygiene practices everyday as long as you're doing it correctly.

Please remember to schedule regular visits with us so we can make sure things are going smoothly, and for deep cleanings. We will be happy to answer any questions you may have, and make suggestions on which products to pick out. We hope to hear from you soon.

If you have any questions or would like to schedule an appointment, please call us at (360) 836-1100 today.

A better kind of dental practice for your entire family.
