Signs You Likely Clench Your Teeth At Night

Posted on 5/20/2018 by Matt Aldridge DDS
Sore Jaw Oasis Dental WA 98683Do you ever wake up with a sore jaw in the morning? If so, then there is a good chance that you were clenching your teeth the night before. This is called bruxism to most professionals. Sometimes you are not just clenching your teeth, but you may be grinding them as well.

This can leave your teeth in shambles if it goes on long enough without some type of intervention. However, most people do not even know they have bruxism until we tell them during an exam. Here are a couple symptoms that you may be clenching your teeth while you sleep at night.

A Sore Jaw is Only One Symptom

Waking up with a sore jaw is not a definite sign you have bruxism, but it is one of the most common complaints from people who do receive a bruxism diagnosis.

If you also have increasingly sensitive teeth, this could be a sign that your enamel is getting worn down. This is common for people who have bruxism. Teeth that begin to wear flat also point to a bruxism diagnosis. The more you grind or clench your teeth, the flatter your teeth will become.

Some people have more severe symptoms. You could wind up with a locked jaw from clenching your teeth in your sleep.

Sometimes the noise of grinding your teeth is so loud that it can wake you up, or wake up those sleeping around you. Other people have constant headaches or earaches from this behavior. If you wake up sore each morning, it is time to get checked out.

The more symptoms you show, the higher the chances become that this is the ailment you struggle with.

Call us today and let us see if bruxism is the cause of your morning discomfort.
